Apr 24
th, 2007, 5:24am Quote

This is TOMOYA writing from Yokosuka, Japan.
My VTZ250 got through 100,000km recently.

I was lucky enough to get VT250FG, VTR250Interceptor for free
and now I'm planning to restore her for racing use.
I'm going to write about how I'm doing restoration with her on URL below.
http://ttomochi.yukigesho.com/VT250FG_Restoration.htm
, this is my writing in the middle in English and Japanese.

I'm going to update this subject if there's something new happened so that
we can share how this project is going.
I hope I would get any useful information and help on this project from you, VTR250Interceptor
lovers.

Hello, Nice to hear from other places in the world. The bike looks really good. It's nice and clean.

I have not been to Yokosuka, Japan for a long time.

I was in the US Navy stationed in Atsugi. That was back in 1994 and 1995. Japan is an great place. I would like to go back to Japan again someday. I saw alot of Japan when I was there but I did not ride motorcycles then. I was more into Mini Coopers and Skyline GTR's. When I go back to Japan someday. I would have to buy some VT250 parts that you can not find in the USA.

Keep in touch with all of us here. Keep up with the restoration.

Dear, IMLost

Thank you for your reply.
It's good for me to hear your saying good things about Japan.
Yokosuka is one of the biggest camp site in Japan and I sometimes find myself enjoying
US army festival held there.

And it's a great idea for us to trade VT250 parts in needs and
I think I would ask you in states about how I'm working on this machine.

Yours,
TOMOYA

Tomoya-san

Soooo pretty!
If I go to Japan, I'll definitely want to see your bike!  Cool
Please keep us posted.

Oh yeah, I keep thinking about this, even though it is old news, but SlimShady said the CBR900 rr brake lever works on the VTR. If you consider changing out the brake lever, would you use the CBR900?

Japan is a cool place. I spent two years there and saw quite a bit of it. Atsugi, Tokyo, Yokosuka and surrounding cities. Hiroshima, Okinawa, Iwo Jima, Yokohama and many other cities there. I have also been to Mt. Fugi but have not climbed it. They say if you don't climb Mount Fugi when your there you will be back.

As for bikes. My VTR250 is in pieces right now. By the end of the week I should have the motor covers powder coated and the motor will be put back together. I still have to powder coat the rims and mount the tires. It has been a long road for collecting all the parts for mine and I hope to have it on the road by June.

TOMOYA

I would highly recommend finding a  43hp VT250 motor... they came stock from the factory in that spec... find that motor and drop it into your "race frame" as a starting motor point... I dont know the "rules" of the circut you are racing on... if it is anything like american rules you are allowed to update and back date the bikes as applicable so if that is "allowed" in your circut i would start there with the 43HP motor and then get more into modding that engine maybe the internal gears or the exteral sprocket ratios... jets air and exhaust etc...

Dear Eric-san,

Thank you for your information on CBR900's lever which fit on VTR250's brake lever.
I wonder how's that feeling when I replace the VTR's one to the CBR900's.
Please let me know when you're coming to Japan, let get together and talk about
VTR and so on.

Dear IMLost,
Mt. Fuji waits for you. If you get here, let's make a plan to climb Mt. Fuji together.
That would be good.
Whoa! I want to know about how you work on powder coat and keep your machine clean.
It might have been hard work collecting parts for your VTR, but
I bet you that yours are coming back on the road by June
Wait for your good new!

Dear DANNiE
This VT250FG-Special edition is mounted 43ps engine originally.
And I'm definitely like to know much about how we can work on jetting, sprocket ratios, Air-fuel, Exhaust. I noticed there's more variation on jetting when I read other topic on this board.

>2007/04/28
I did some restoration work on the machine.
I'm going to write about it in details later on URL below. ↓
http://ttomochi.yukigesho.com/VT250FG_Restoration.htm
Excerpts...
I removed the fairings, lights, meters, tank, and carburetor. and washed the body really clean.
Battery is good.
Steering is good.
There's no sigh of replacement of parts except rear tire.
Sprocket ratio is  normal.
Air Clearer is a new one.
There are a lot of rust inside of tank. I have to replace it to the new one.

Tomoya-sama,
I recently put on CBR 600 F2 brake and clutch levers on my VTR 89. They installed without mods and I was very skeptical, however they feel fine and look good. I honestly was thinking about putting on a CBR 900rr brake lever, but change my mind do to cost.

I wish there was some kind of easy way to make my VTR into a street fighter, but because there is no single piece headlight avaliable here in the USA, I am not sure what to do.

the tank can be cleaned and repaired... a company called "Wurth" makes a black rust adhearing paint/coating... I used it and no problems or "reactions" from fuel...

as for mods like i said get the rules and let us know... you can always mill the heads and run high octane fuel -116- as for the jets and such im not sure what yours are.... what year is the bike? I have a manual for a VT250F i think... as far as i can recall i think the carb layout design is diffrent... however if you milled the head and ran high ocatne fuel you would definatly need larger jets something at or above 130's

again let us know what is allowed in the class your racing in... milling the heads might not even be allowed...

also what "stock" gearing and chian size does the bike have? 520 or 428

personally id go with the 428 chain its lighter and smaller and stock has more teeth on the front... so it gives you good play for sizing sprockets for the rear...

also the internal transmission "gear ratios" are important to now... what are yours..?

To Eric-san,

Thanks for your info on CBR600 F2 brake on VTR250Interceptor.
CBR600 and CBR900 are contemporary models in Japanese market.
If I feel I need to change on lever, I would do some fitting with those.

I also eager to see your Street fighter.
It's absolutely difficult to find parts even in Japan, because VTR250Interceptor
was 20-years-old model. However, there's a lot of VT-Lovers in Japan and in the USA
It's a fun to find a way to fix or modify my machine talking over our bikes.

VT-Lovers meeting in Japan has been held. I was kind of in charge of that meeting.
Here's my report on that meeting below.↓

Dear Dannie,

○TANK CLEANER
Thanks for your info on Tank cleaner such as "Wurth." I would like to read chemical facts on its label. And then I could compare "Wurth" with the similar products available in Japan. I'm wondering replacing the tank or using the cleaner....

○Regulations
About regulations in Japan, I'm now studying the documents and planning to translate into English. Wait a moment. Probably I need a bilingual co-editor on my site.
Is there anybody who can read Japanese and English?
(
http://ttomochi.yukigesho.com/VT250FG_Restoration.htm)
I need to check whether I can mill the head and boring the cylinders or ports.

○Jetting
There's no choice over 130 in Japan. I'm interested in that.
There're different Air funnel, carbulator, exhausts in Vt-series.
   ★http://www.geocities.jp/toyatosh/VTZ_tobuy_01.htm
I would like to do the setting after practicing in circuit.

○Chain size and Sprockets ratio
428 chain size and wide sprockets ratios are interesting.
Actually 40ps Engine produced after 43ps engine (VTR250Interceptor) has two types 520 chain and 428.
Only VT250J SPADA has 428 size, which is lightest model of VT-series.

○My VTR250 Interceptor, VT250FG
My VTR250Intereceptor, here what we call VT250FG in Japan, is 1986 model.
has gear ratios, such as
2.562
1.85
1.478
1.24
1.074
0.965
2.821/3.214
